Delta of Venus, the indie band formed in 1993 by Dawn Estabrooks, Mat Tarbox, and Ellery Twining, has returned with a captivating new release, Disengaged b/w Slipping. After disbanding in 1997 following the lackluster reception of their full-length album, the group reunited after Ellery’s solo successes, seeking a creative spark to rekindle their musical flame. The result is a pair of beautifully crafted tracks that mark the band’s first recorded material since their reformation, showcasing their evolving sound and songwriting approach. Both songs, “Disengaged” and “Slipping,” exemplify Delta of Venus’s distinctive blend of shoegaze and indie pop, yet with an experimental twist. The band has abandoned the traditional structure of verse-chorus-verse, opting for a more fluid and movement-based arrangement. Instead of distinct sections, the songs unfold through layers of sound, creating an immersive atmosphere that allows the music to breathe and evolve.
This unconventional approach aligns perfectly with their shoegaze influences, where melodies and textures intertwine rather than being confined to rigid song structures. It’s a bold decision that enhances the emotional depth and organic flow of both tracks. Recorded in February 2024 at Dirt Floor Recording and Production, the single sees the addition of vocalist Issy, who joined the band to handle all of the vocals after original member Dawn had to step away. Despite having little time to prepare, Issy delivers a stunning performance, weaving complex harmonies that heighten the emotional impact of the songs. Her voice floats effortlessly over the lush instrumentation, creating a striking contrast with the band’s expansive guitar, synths, and percussion. Each instrument gets its moment to shine, yet they all work together harmoniously to support the overall mood and texture of the tracks. “Disengaged” leads with a sweeping atmosphere, its subtle melodies unfolding in waves of sound.
The song’s intricate layers and dynamics echo the themes of detachment and introspection, capturing the essence of the title. Meanwhile, “Slipping” offers a more fragile and reflective vibe, its gentle pace drawing listeners deeper into the hypnotic space created by the band. Both songs shine with emotional depth, with the instrumentation playing a key role in conveying the nuanced feelings of each track. The reunion of Delta of Venus has produced an impressive result. Disengaged b/w Slipping is proof that creativity doesn’t have an expiration date. The combination of innovative songwriting, ethereal vocals, and masterful instrumentation makes this single a compelling glimpse into what’s next for the revitalized band. Fans of shoegaze and indie pop will find much to admire in this release, as it perfectly balances nostalgia with forward-thinking artistry.
